  • 1 & 7/8 yards solid
  • 7/8 yard binding
  • 5 & 5/8 yards backing

Cut solid fabric into:

  • 15 – 2 & 1/2″ x 16″ rectangles (fabric C)
  • 8 – 2 & 1/2″ x WOF strips (fabric D)
  • 9 – 2 & 1/2 x WOF strips (fabric E)

Cut binding fabric into:

  • 9 – 2 & 1/2″ x WOF strips (fabric F)

Directions:

Step 1

Take a solid layer cake and a print layer cake and put them right sides together. Pin to secure, and trim it to 9 & 1/2″ square using a 9 & 1/2″ squared-up ruler. Now, draw a line from corner to corner on both sides, then stitch a 1/4″ away on both sides of the drawn line. Make 40 of these units, then sub-cut them into quarters. Now, you have 160 squares that you’ll also cut on the diagonal to have 32o half-square triangles. Press them to one side, then press the seams open.

Step 2

Now, start assembling the star cakes block. Lay out your half-square triangles, sew down one seam, press to the right on the top, and press towards the left on the bottom. Sew together the center seam, and press to the bottom. After this, lay out your units, paying attention to the placement to form a pinwheel in the center. Stitch all the way down, press the top to the right, and the bottom to the left. Stitch your center seam, and press to the bottom. Make a total of 20 star cakes blocks. (Make sure to check the free pattern above for the block placement.)

Step 3

Now, assemble four blocks and three sashing rectangles. Press toward the sashing and make five. Assemble these rows with four fabric D strips. Attach your side borders, press, attach your top and bottom borders, and press. Your quilt is now finished.
