Fall Craft Ideas - Twine Pumpkins Tutorial. Learn how to make twine pumpkins for fall decorating

When it comes to fall decorations, I try to make as many of them myself as I can. Shopping is easier and can certainly be fun, but nothing compares to seeing something in your home and knowing you made it. You can also customize the colors, size, and style to match the fall decor ideas you already have in mind.

Here’s another cute fall craft idea to try:

How to Make a Pumpkin Using Fabric Scraps

This twine pumpkin is simple to make, inexpensive, and much cuter than something made from leftover twine has any right to be. I used a cinnamon stick for the stem because it adds a warm fall scent, but an ordinary small stick will work just as well.

Make several of these pumpkin crafts for a rustic fall centerpiece, place them on a table with candles or fairy lights, or use them anywhere that needs a little autumn touch. This is easily one of my favorite fall crafts I have made, and I’ll show you exactly how to make it in the steps below.

Step 1: Wrap the Twine Around the Tube

Cut a piece of twine slightly longer than the tissue roll tube. Lay it lengthwise along the center of the toilet paper roll, leaving extra length hanging from both ends, then tape the ends in place.

Begin wrapping twine around the middle of the toilet paper tube. Push each new row close to the previous one as you wrap so there are no large gaps. Continue until the wrapped section reaches your desired thickness. The more twine you use, the fuller your pumpkin will be.

Step 2: Remove the Wrapped Twine

Cut the twine from the roll, then remove the tape holding the lengthwise piece in place. Keep the wrapped twine pressed firmly together so it does not loosen.

Carefully slide the toilet paper roll tube out from the center while holding the bundle securely. Make sure the separate piece of twine remains in place through the middle of the wrapped loops. This is going to be one of your favorite fall crafts – wait until you see the end result!

Step 3: Shape and Finish the Pumpkin

Bring the two ends of the lengthwise twine together and tie them tightly around the center of the wrapped bundle. Secure them with a firm knot, then trim away any excess if needed.

Gently spread and arrange the twine loops around the tied center until they form a full, round pumpkin shape. Adjust the loops evenly to fill any open spaces. Finally, apply hot glue to the bottom of a cinnamon stick and insert it into the top center of the pumpkin to create the stem. An ordinary small stick will also work, but cinnamon adds a lovely fall scent.

Pro Tips 💡

  • Use a sturdy tissue paper roll tube so it does not bend while you wrap the twine.
  • Use only a small amount of hot glue for the cinnamon stick so it does not show between the twine loops.
  • For a larger, fuller pumpkin, make two separate wrapped twine bundles. Place them together, tie them tightly through the center with a separate piece of twine, then spread and arrange the loops until the two bundles blend into one full pumpkin shape.
Can I use yarn instead of twine?

Yes, yarn gives these easy fall pumpkins a chunkier, cozier look, and it is a fun way to use up leftover skeins. Jute twine keeps the rustic, farmhouse finish you see in this tutorial.

How far ahead can I make them?

Make them at the start of the season – this is a quick, budget friendly craft, so a whole batch takes one afternoon. They store flat in a box and come right back out looking cute through Thanksgiving.

What size tube works best?

A standard toilet paper roll is the perfect size for this how-to. For bigger pumpkins, cut a paper towel tube in half and wrap it the same step-by-step way.

Do I need hot glue?

Only for the cinnamon stick stem – tape does all the wrapping. That makes this an easy, kid friendly craft, though the glue gun step is best left to adults.
