These are plain painted rails fitted with rows of small brass hooks and stacked at different heights, so earrings, necklaces and bracelets each get a line of their own instead of tangling together in a dish. The navy and gold color blocking is what lifts a length of pine into something you would happily hang in a bedroom, and a gold rod strung between two rails takes bangles. This is the most ambitious piece on the list and the one that actually solves the problem. Six drawers take rings and studs, the lid lifts up to a mirror, and both side doors open onto rows of hooks so long chains hang straight down instead of knotting themselves in a drawer. It stands on its own curved legs at dressing table height. 10. Marbled Clay Ring Dishes

Everyone needs somewhere to put a ring down. Two or three colors of clay get twisted and rolled together so the marbling runs all the way through the piece instead of sitting on the surface, which is why these do not look like the ones sold in every gift shop. A line of gold around the rim finishes them. No two come out the same, so make a set in one sitting and keep whichever one you like best. 11. Chicken Wire Frame Jewelry Organizer

Chicken wire stretched inside an old frame is hard to beat for earrings, because every hexagon in the mesh is somewhere a hook can sit and you can see the whole collection at once. Below it a stained board fitted with decorative knobs takes necklaces and bracelets, which is what stops the usual tangle in a dish. Charity shops are full of these. Dated wooden jewelry boxes with ring rolls, lined drawers and little hinged trays inside, all of which cost a fortune to buy new, and the only thing wrong with them is the outside. Paint fixes that in an afternoon. The roses here are a rub on transfer rather than hand painting, which is why it looks like this and not like a first attempt at florals. I love that this one skips the pipe-fitting look most jewelry organizers go for and uses warm stained wood instead, though it still gives you a dowel for everything from a single pair of earrings to a stack of bangles. You cut a plywood strip at an angle, stain it in an Early American shade, then glue dowels cut to three different lengths on it so they don’t overlap once you start hanging pieces. A frame hook nailed to the back is the only hardware it needs to get on the wall. It’s a solid weekend project if you’re tired of digging through a tangled heap of necklaces on your dresser. A metal toolbox already has everything a jewelry chest needs. A hinged lid, a latch that holds it shut and a long shallow interior that suits chains far better than a deep box does. So the work here is paint, a ring roll insert dropped into one end for rings and studs, and a set of decorative feet. The feet do the most, because lifting it off the surface is what stops your eye reading it as a toolbox. Garages and car boot sales are full of these and nobody wants them. This one is ours and it starts with something most people throw away. The moulded gold tray inside a Ferrero Rocher box already has twenty round wells in it, and each one happens to be the right size for a ring, a pair of studs or a small pendant. Pressed flowers tucked between the cups stop it reading as a sweet box, and the clear lid that came with it keeps the dust off. It sits in a drawer or out on a dresser. 31. Air Dry Clay Jewelry Tray

This one is ours and it is the entry point if you have never touched clay. The clay gets rolled flat and laid into a shallow oval with the edge turned up so nothing rolls off, and the blue and white pattern comes from a printed napkin pressed into the surface, which means you need no painting skill whatsoever.
