DIY Fall Garland Tutorial

Learn how to make a fall garland using felt fabric and jute rope. The step-by-step tutorial below walks you through cutting the felt into leaf shapes and gluing them onto the rope in an easy pattern.

Step 1: Cut the Felt Leaves

Stack four pieces of felt in different colors. Place the leaf template on top, trace around it with a fabric pencil, and cut through all the layers using sharp scissors. The number of leaves you need will depend on the length of your rope.

Step 2: Shape the Felt Leaves

Take one leaf and apply a small amount of hot glue to the bottom center. Pinch the edges together to create a 3D shape, then repeat with the remaining leaves.

Step 3: Glue the Leaves Onto the Rope

Glue the leaves onto the rope, alternating sides with each leaf and making sure the rope is covered.

For the first set of four leaves, use this color order: light brown, brown, orange, then white.

For the second set, use this order: brown, light brown, white, then orange.

Repeat both patterns until you reach the other end of the rope.

Step 4: Cover the Rope Ends

Cut a small rectangle from light brown felt and glue it around the end of the rope. Trim off any excess, then cover it with more felt leaves.

More Fall Garland Ideas and Ways to Use It

This easy fall decor project is completely customizable. Make the garland as long or short as you need, and choose any color or size to match your DIY fall decor. You can also add felt flowers, wooden beads, tiny pumpkins, or fairy lights to create your own unique autumn leaf garland. Whether you prefer traditional orange and brown shades or soft neutral colors, this budget-friendly felt fall craft is an easy way to bring the season into your home. If you have ever wondered why leaves change color each fall, recreating those warm reds, oranges, and browns in felt lets you enjoy that autumn palette long after the real leaves drop.

You can also make a shorter version for a shelf or cabinet, or create several matching garlands for different areas of your home. This is just one of the easy fall crafts that I absolutely enjoyed making. If you love this autumn home decor project, check this DIY fall wreath.

FAQs

Why does my felt keep unfolding after I glue it?

The felt might be too thick or rigid to hold the shape properly. Try a softer, more flexible type of felt. Add a small dab of hot glue near the bottom of the leaf, pinch the edges together, and keep holding them until the glue is completely set.

Is a rotary cutter suitable for cutting felt?

Yes. Use a sharp rotary blade with a self-healing cutting mat when making straight cuts. For small leaves and rounded edges, fabric scissors are often easier to control and produce cleaner shapes.

What glue should I use for felt leaves?

Hot glue is ideal for this project because it bonds quickly and keeps the leaves folded. A low-temperature glue gun is a safer option, especially if older children are helping, but they should always be closely supervised by an adult.

What can I use instead of rope?

If you do not have rope, cut long strips of felt and glue the ends together to create one continuous strand. You can also use twine, yarn, ribbon, jute cord, cotton cord, a fabric strip, or clear fishing line. Choose a material that is strong enough to support the felt leaves and complements the colors of your garland.
