Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and what better way to commemorate this special day than to make themed projects that would match the event? In my case, I love sewing projects as it is one of my favorite hobbies of all time, so it’s just fitting to sew some Valentine’s Day coasters.

The coaster design that I chose to make is this one by Happy Hour Stitches on YouTube, it’s a set of hearts with X and O and is the perfect sewing project. You can give this as a gift or make it for personal use. Learn the instructions down below now.

Materials for Valentine’s Day Coaster:

  • Pink or red print fabric
  • White or background fabric
  • Batting fabric
  • Backing fabric
  • Binding fabric
  • Ricrac, optional
  • Marking pen, pencil, or chalk
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and a cutting mat
  • Needle and thread
  • Iron, for pressing
  • Sewing machine
  • Pattern (Click here to download the pattern)

How to Sew a Valentine’s Day Coaster:

Step 1

Download the pattern and cut all the fabric pieces as instructed, then take 2 pink rectangles and 2 large white squares, and draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each white square from corner to corner.

Step 2

Place the squares on the bottom corners of the rectangles with their right sides facing and edges matching, then sew along the marked lines, and cut off the excess layers ¼ inch away from the stitching line.

Step 3

Press the fabric open, then place a smaller square on the upper corners of the rectangle right sides facing, and stitch them along the lines. Press them open and repeat the same process to the other upper corner of the rectangle, then lay the 2 rectangle units with their right sides facing, and stitch them together.

Step 4

Give them a nice press, then sew the shorter border strips on each side of the block unit, press open, and sew the longer border strips at the top and bottom making sure to press the seams. Lay the backing with its right side down on a flat surface, then place the batting over it, and the heart block unit on top.

Step 5

Quilt them together however you want, then trim the edges of the backing and binding so that they’re even with the heart block unit. Bind the coaster as normal or add ricrac around the edges as shown in the video. You can now make the “X” and “O” coasters. Watch the video tutorial for more details.
