Materials:

  • 1 fabric panel
  • 1 charm pack
  • 1 contrasting color of fabric, for the border
  • 1 batting fabric
  • 1 backing fabric
  • Needle and thread
  • Marking pen or pencil
  • Ruler
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and a cutting mat
  • Sewing machine

Directions:

Step 1

Pick 2 contrasting charm squares, then lay them together matching the edges nicely, and with their right sides together. Draw a line down the center diagonally, then stitch them together on each side of the marking with a ¼-inch seam allowance, and cut the piece through the marked line to create 2 triangle pieces. Lightly press the fabric open, then lay them on top of each other with their right sides facing and matching fabrics opposite from each other, and position them so that the seams are horizontal. Next, draw a line at the center and down the seams, then sew on each side of that line with a ¼-inch seam allowance, and cut right through the line.

Step 2

Lightly press the fabric before opening and then press again, now you’ll have a block of 4 little triangles. Lay the blocks all over each side of the panel to identify how many you’ll need for a side border, then stitch the blocks together, and press smoothly. Trim off the excess fabric around the panel if needed to make the size and edges even. Sew the column of blocks on each side of the panel, then cut 3 inches of border fabric, and sew them all around the patchwork. Sew the batting and backing fabric to your fabric, then finish your quilt by adding some swirls and patterns all over the whole piece. If you have some leftover blocks, you can use them to make a matching baby pillow.
