I absolutely love this pattern. Isn’t it beautiful? It is called the Ring of Fire quilt by Missouri Star, which is based on the pecking order quilt that Jenny Doan made. If you haven’t checked that project yet, you definitely should. You’ll be surprised how simple and fun it is to make. It’s probably the easiest pattern that I have ever tried!

If you want to make this quilt, you will need a pack of layer cakes or 10″ squares, background fabric, outer border, binding, and backing. It’s an easy project that involves a lot of snowballed corners. It’s not as complicated as you think, trust me. Once you finish one block, it will be easier for you. The block size measures 13 1/2″ unfinished and 13″ finished.

How to Make a Ring of Fire Quilt
Step 1:
Take 4 pieces of layer cakes with good contrast. Stack them together. Cut 2 pieces of 2 1/2″ strips for the outer borders, and 1 piece of 5″ square for the center blocks. Cut one strip stack into 5″ strips and the 7″ strips on the other stack.
Step 2:
Cut 2 1/2″ squares from the background fabric. Place one 2 1/2″ squares on the corner of the 5″ squares. Sew diagonally right across. Press them flat.
Step 3:
Get one square from step 2 and place a 5″ strip and a 7″ strip on the sides. Place 2 1/2″ squares and sew them diagonally just like in the photo below. Make sure to line them up with the dark facing the block. Trim the excess off and press them open. Sew them together.
Step 4:
Add a 2 1/2″ square on the intersection between the 5″ and 7″ strips on the block and sew diagonally. Cut the excess and press open.
Step 5:
Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the other blocks.
Step 6:
Get four pieces of the block and sew them together just like in the photo below. Add 1 1/2″ sashing on one side and the bottom of the block. You need 3 rows with 3 blocks each. Once you sew the blocks together, you just need to add sashing to the sides and top.
