Materials:

• your quilting fabric
• square ruler
• mat
• rotary cutter

Step 1

First of all, a tip for your pre-wash fabric: wash it and throw it in the dryer until it’s almost dry. Pull it out, iron it out the rest of the way then use. If you’re not going to use it right away, let it air dry, fold it up, and put it on the shelf until you’re ready to use it.

Now, for squaring up your fabric, get your quilting fabric and lay it out. Fold it together, selvage to selvage. Pull that selvage really hard and make sure that there’s no shrunken part. This will help you to align it a bit better.

Step 2

Next, square up your edge against the fold, not against the selvage, before you cut your strips. Now, line your fold up on any of the lines on your mat. Once you’ve done this, get your square ruler and line it up an inch on your fold, then cut the edge using your rotary cutter. After this, you’re now ready to cut your strips. Line the 2 & 1/2-inch line up with your fabric, and hold your ruler with a cupped hand, pressing it with just your fingers. (Never hold a ruler with a flat hand because there’s a tendency for it to slide.)
