Quilting has always been a hobby that I spend a lot of time in and probably one of my all-time favorite projects would be pierced heart quilt blocks! They’re so fun to make and pretty easy as well. Plus, you can make these heart quilt blocks in three different ways, with a finished size of 10½ inches each. Learn how to make them through this video tutorial by The Simple Quilter on YouTube.

Materials:

Rectangular Heart

  • 4 pieces 1½” squares of background fabric
  • 2 pieces 5½” squares of background fabric
  • 2 pieces 5½”*10½” of heart fabric

Four Patch Heart

  • 4 pieces 1½” squares of background fabric
  • 2 pieces 6½” squares of background fabric
  • 2 pieces 5½” squares of heart fabric
  • 2 pieces 6½” squares of heart fabric

Strip Pieces Heart

  • 4 pieces 1½” of background fabric
  • 2 pieces 5½” squares of background fabric
  • 4 pieces 2½”*10½” strips of heart fabric
  • 2 pieces 2½”*5½” of heart fabric

Directions:

Rectangular Heart

First, draw a corner to corner line on the wrong side of each of the background squares, then lay the smaller background squares on each upper corner of the heart fabric. Next, place the larger square background fabric on the lower area of the heart fabric, then sew them on the line you drew about ½ inch away and cut off those diagonal lines you drew. Open up the background fabrics and press them around nicely, then lay the 2 pieces of sewn fabric together with their right sides facing, and match the points. Sew them together on the side which would appear to be the center of the heart shape, then open the fabric, and press.

Four Patch Heart

Lay 2 pieces of square heart fabric, then put the small background squares on both upper corners, mark them from corner to corner, sew, and trim them off. Open the background fabric up, then give them a good press. Grab the large background pieces, then mark a line from corner to corner, and place the heart fabric square on top with their right sides facing. Sew them about ¼ inch away from the line, trim, and press open.  Assemble and sew the pieces together.

Strip Pieces Heart

Sew the small background squares on the upper corners of 2 small rectangle heart pieces, then lay the other strips below it, sewing each 2 together and giving them a good press. Next, join the 2 sewn strips, and sew them together, then trim them off. Place a large background square at the bottom corner, mark diagonally, then cut the fabric on that line. Sew the background fabric to the strip heart fabric, then press them open. Repeat on the other side of the heart fabric.
