With your green fabric scraps, you can make the fastest last minute Christmas patchwork tree by Jordan Fabrics. For this project, you can use different shades of green in different patterns. Just make sure to use dark and light colors for variation. It is so easy to make and is a great way to use all the extra fabric strips from your past works! Materials:

  • green scraps – 7 pieces of 2 3/8″ squares(for half-triangles) and 22 pieces of 2″ squares
  • 7 pieces of 2 3/8″ squares and 49 pieces of 2″ light squares (background)
  • 13 pieces of tiny circles for red ornaments
  • 2 pieces of 2 1/2″ WOF for border
  • 2 pieces of 2 1/2″ WOF for binding
  • 22″ square for backing and batting

Instructions:

Step 1:

Take 1 piece of 2 3/8″ background squares and draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the reverse side. Do the same for the remaining 6 pieces. Place each on top of the green 2 3/8″ squares, right sides together. Stitch a quarter inch away on each side of the line. Cut along the drawn line to get two half-square triangles.

Step 2:

Open the half-square triangle unit and press the seam allowance toward the background fabric. Trim”dog ears” if preferred. The square should now measure 2″.  Repeat the same process to make 14 half-square triangles.

Step 3:

Lay out the half-square triangles and 2″ green squares. Rows will have 9 or 10 blocks. Sew into rows, then stitch rows together. Trim the block to make a square.

Step 4:

Sew the 2 flange pieces into one long piece, then iron them in half. It now measures 1/2″. Stitch the flange to one side and trim. Repeat for all sides. Next, sew a 2 1/2″ border onto all 4 sides.

Step 5:

Draw ornaments onto the paper side of iron-on fusible webbing. Fuse it onto the back side of the red ornament. Cut out ornaments and fuse them into your patchwork. Edge stitch them.

Step 6:

Quilt and bind the patchwork.
