Beginner-Friendly Turtle Quilt Block Tutorial

This beautiful quilt block by Teresa DownUnder on YouTube is so fun and easy to make, and it is one of my favorite quilt projects. It’s perfect for beginners and comprises only rectangles and squares.

It’s a very pretty quilt that you can make quickly and you can make it in any color combinations that you like. You can use this block pattern for a coaster, table runner, or just about any project that you want.
Materials for Turtle Quilt Block:
- Purple fabric
- Cream fabric
- Yellow fabric
- Marking pen, pencil, or chalk
- Scissors or rotary cutter and a cutting mat
- Needle and thread
- Iron, for pressing
- Sewing machine
How to Make a Turtle Quilt Block:
Step 1
Cut 2 strips of purple fabric at 3½ x 6½ inches and 2 strips of cream fabric of the same size, then cut 2 squares each of cream and purple fabric at 3½ inches, and 4 squares of yellow fabric at 3½ inches as well. Place 2 yellow squares on a flat surface diagonally as shown in the video, then place a cream strip vertically at the bottom of the left yellow square and one at the top of the yellow square at the right.
Step 2
Put a purple strip horizontally at the bottom of the yellow square on the right and the other on top of the yellow square on the left. Place purple squares on each side of the yellow squares, then put the squares next to them on top and bottom, and place the final yellow squares on the empty corners. Group them in quarters, then stitch the squares first, and stitch them to the strips. Sew the block units in pairs, stitch them together, and press the seams as you go.
