When I first saw this quilt block online, it caught my interest instantly, it was chaotic and beautiful, and it looked challenging to make, too. Everything I’m looking for in a quilt block, I found in this ribbon and wreaths block by Brita Nelson the Questioning Quilter on YouTube.

It was one of the best quilt projects I’ve done in a while and is something I would definitely make again. Contrary to what I thought initially, this quilt block seems to be super simple and easy to make, the only thing that was a bit tricky for me was the part where you reassemble everything, but other than that, it was worth the try!

Materials for Ribbon & Wreaths Quilt:

  • Green fabric, solid or print
  • Red fabric, solid or print
  • White background fabric
  • Marking pen, pencil, or chalk
  • Ruler
  • Scissors or rotary and a cutting mat
  • Needle and thread
  • Iron, for pressing
  • Sewing machine

How to Make a Ribbon & Wreaths Quilt:

Step 1

First, make 2 each of red and white and green and white half-square triangles, press them nicely, and trim them down to 4⅜ inches. Put the red half-square triangles on opposite corners diagonally so that the seams make a straight line and the red corners point down to the left.

Step 2

Put the green half-square triangles on the empty spaces, then align their seams as well, and ensure that the green corners point down the right. Stitch them together, then give the seams a good press, and your angel block should have a final measure of 8¼ inches, trim if needed.

Step 3

Now, cut the block 1⅜ inches from the center seam, then make 4 cuts rotating the block 90° after each cut, and you should end up with 9 sub-blocks. Rearrange the block units as demonstrated in the video, then stitch them per row, and then the rows to each other making sure to press as you go. Continue to make more blocks, then assemble them to form the wreath as shown in the video, and stitch them together.
