Materials:

For a twin-size quilt:

  • 1 layer cake
  • 1 5/8 yards fabric, for sashing and inside borders
  • 1 3/4 yards outside borders

Directions:

Step 1

Cut your layer cakes into fourths, then take a light and dark square and put them right sides together. Sew all the way around the outside edge. After this, cut from corner to corner, then flip it over to the other side and cut across. Iron them open afterward. Now, put these two together, with the dark of the first unit put on top, then the next one has the dark down toward the bottom left. For the third unit, put it opposite the first unit, then the last one, the dark goes the other way. (The center should make a little hourglass shape.) Sew them together.

Step 2

Repeat these steps until you have enough unit blocks. After this, lay four pieces together all the same direction, so you’ll end up with darks in the center and lights in the center. Sew them afterward, then press open.
