It was my dads birthday and I wanted to do him a favor. He always wanted a garden so I decided to make one, the only problem was we didn’t have a backyard, we just had a patio. 1. Cinder Block Raised Garden Bed
For an inexpensive way to get a garden, start with this raised bed made from cinder blocks. Easy to make and cheap, this is a super idea if you are in a rental property.
2. Corrugated Metal Garden Bed
This simply has to be the cutest garden bed I’ve ever seen. Colorful and inexpensive, it goes well in most any yard, but if you are going for the country look, this garden bed should be a requirement!
3. Raised Beds Edged With Brick
Dogwoods and Dandelions
If you have ever priced up cedar for a raised bed and quietly closed the tab, this is the version to look at. Brick laid straight on the ground holds the edge with no cutting, no drilling and no corner brackets, and there is nothing in it that can rot out on you. The bed in the photo has squash, peppers, chard and cabbage going at the same time, which tells you the depth is working. Straw down the paths keeps the weeds and the mud under control. This is the big one on the list and it is worth the scroll. The walls are salvaged window sashes, the roof is a translucent panel rather than glass, which keeps the weight and the cost down, and the whole thing sits on a cinder block knee wall so no timber is sitting in wet ground. The mismatched panes are the point, not a compromise. If you have been picking up old windows off curbsides with a vague plan, this is what the plan looks like finished. 12. Simple Wood Raised Garden Beds

Three long boxes, plain lumber, no joinery worth the name, and that is exactly why there are three of them rather than one show piece. The proportions are the thing to copy here. Long and narrow means you can reach the center from either side without ever standing on the soil, and the gap between the rows is wide enough to actually kneel in. 13. Raised Beds With an Arched Trellis Entry

If you have the room, this is the version that turns a vegetable patch into somewhere you actually want to stand. Galvanized beds run down both sides with a cedar arch over the entry, and the wire panels on that arch are doing real work: beans and cucumbers climb it, which frees the soil underneath for everything else. 17. Large Wood Planter Boxes

The reason to build these rather than buy is depth. Shop planters are almost always too shallow for anything with a real root system, and these are deep enough to hold full size rose bushes, which they are doing here. They are plain planks screwed into long boxes, so you can build them to whatever length your patio actually is instead of the length a store decided on. 24. Simple Cedar Raised Bed Against the House

A raised bed does not have to be a weekend of heavy carpentry, and this shallow cedar one is the argument for starting small. It sits in the strip against the house that nobody ever plants, picks up the warmth thrown back off the wall, and is narrow enough to reach across without standing in it. Bamboo canes lashed into a rough frame hold the tomatoes up, and the marigolds along the front are working, not just decorating. Two long beds with a mown path down the middle is about as useful as a garden layout gets. Everything is within arm’s reach from the path, which means the soil never gets walked on and stays loose, and a straight run of bed is far easier to net or cover than any clever shape. Cucumbers sprawl along one side and caged tomatoes go up on the other, with straw mulch on top holding the water in through the hot weeks. Plain timber, built to be worked rather than looked at.
