9. Tin Can Desk Organizer
A boy’s desk collects pens, chargers and small unidentifiable objects at an alarming rate. Tin cans covered and grouped together give all of it somewhere to live, and they are rugged enough to survive actual use. I like that it costs nothing. My tutorial is here.
15. Sugar Skull Wall Art
An egg tray becomes a bold sugar skull, which is exactly the kind of thing a teenager will actually agree to hang on his wall. It has real edge to it and it started life in the recycling. I love a project with that gap between input and output. Here is how I made mine.
23. Colored Paper Pen Holder
Pens migrate into drawers where nobody can see them, and then you go and buy more. This bright paper holder keeps them upright and visible on the desk, and you can match the colors to whatever is on the walls. Quick and nearly free. My step by step is here.
27. DIY Roman Shades
I always preferred roman shades to blinds or curtains and assumed I could never afford them. It turns out I could just make them. Pick a bold solid or a graphic print and they anchor the whole room. Here is exactly how I did mine.
28. Photo Frame Magnets
Game day photos and pictures of friends end up curling on a corkboard. These little hot glue frames give them a proper edge and stick straight onto any metal surface. I made a whole batch in one evening. My tutorial is right this way.

34. Photo Resin Coaster
A coaster with his own photo sealed inside is a desk accessory that says something about him rather than just protecting the wood. I have made these in a few different styles now. They look far more finished than they have any right to. Come see my process.
36. Painted Beach Rocks
Beach rocks are the most forgiving painting surface there is, which makes them perfect for a beginner. My boys have done geometric patterns, gaming themes, whatever they were into that month, and they line up on a shelf beautifully. Here is my how to.
39. Batik Canvas Art
Batik uses acrylic and glue to get that traditional textile look, and it is far more accessible than it sounds. The finished canvas has serious visual impact for very basic supplies. I found it a lovely way into textile art. My tutorial is waiting.
