21. Paper Doll Costume
themerrythought
A dollar. That’s the whole materials cost, because The Merrythought cuts this one from a single sheet of foam board with an X-Acto knife, in the classic paper doll silhouette with the fold out tabs at the shoulders. Fabric gets glued on with Mod Podge or hot glue for the outfit, the tab outlines go on in permanent marker and a hole punched at each side of the waist lets a string tie the whole thing to you. I’ve been cutting with an X-Acto since design school, so take this from me: start with a fresh blade. A dull one tears foam board instead of cutting it.
22. Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” Costume
andreasnotebook
Andrea’s Notebook went after a whole film instead of a character, which is a bolder move than it sounds. A vintage suit, slicked hair and stuffed crows perched on the shoulders, and Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds walks in the door. Making people work for the reference is my favorite kind of costume, because the ones who get it will not stop talking about it.
23. Thing 1 and Thing 2 Costume
laurenconrad
Siblings, couples, best friends, this one stretches to fit whoever you can talk into it. Lauren Conrad’s Thing 1 and Thing 2 is matching blue wigs, red jumpsuits and a big white circle with the number on the front. The wigs do most of the heavy lifting. Two people, one afternoon, recognizable from the end of the driveway.
