This houndstooth quilt block is the perfect pattern for beginners or those looking for an easy sewing project. If you are wondering, it got its name from the jagged shape of the check, which resembles the outline of a hound dog’s tooth. This fun pattern is also known as hounds tooth check, dogstooth, puppytooth, and border tartan.

To make this block, you will need 2 1/2″ background and colored strips, 5″ colored squares, and 5″ background squares. The steps are very easy to understand, which makes it a great weekend project. From your print fabric and background fabric, cut 2.5″ strips. Take one colored strip and one background strip, and sew them together with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Make another pair.
Place them on top of each other, right sides together with the opposite colors touching. Sew on the sides with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Lay the 45-degree line on your ruler on the seam line, then cut. Slide the ruler to the opposite seam line and cut. Repeat for the whole strip set. Open each one and press them flat.
Lay out the block. Take a 5″ background square, a 5″ colored square, and 2 pieces of the block from step 2. Arrange the four pieces together like a four-patch block. See the photo below for reference. Sew them together with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press the seams open and flatten each block.
Repeat the steps for the remaining strips and squares.
