Materials:

  • 32oz mason jar
  • solar pathway light
  • Halloween fabric
  • twine
  • fabric dye
  • acrylic paints (white, black, brown)
  • glue
  • dirt
  • water
  • paper towels
  • orange/flickering LED (optional)

Tools:

  • hot glue gun
  • scissors
  • soldering iron (optional)
  • screwdriver (optional)
  • paintbrush
  • toothbrush

Directions:

Step 1

Dye your Halloween fabric with a bit of green and brown fabric dye and let it sit for about 30 minutes. While waiting, go ahead and prep your mason jar. To make the jar look old, apply a thin layer of paint to it. Put some white acrylic paint on a plate then add some dirt. Crumple some paper, wet it, and use it to sponge a really thin layer of paint. To make it look even dirtier, make a wash with some brown paint, then use the toothbrush to flick on some blue spots. (To make a wash, use a little bit of paint with a lot of water.) Use some green wash for the final touch. After this, let it completely dry. Back to the fabric, rinse it really well, and make sure that it’s completely dry before the next step. Next, use a hot glue gun to loosely glue it around the edges. This step doesn’t need to be perfect, you want to keep it gathered in an organic-looking. Glue one end of the twine, then wrapped it around really tight. (This helps to hide the edge where the fabric is glued on.)

Step 2

Next, to attach the light, use some hot glue on the room of the jar. To hide the scene where the lights are attached to the rim and make sure no light escapes, use more twine. To give the lid a weathered look, dry brush some greens, browns, and bronze colors onto it. Use a black wash to hide the seam around the edge. Finally, attach a rope to hang the light.
