Materials:

  • Background fabric
  • Assorted yellow and orange fabric
  • Texture magic fabric
  • Coordinating color of thread
  • Needle
  • Rotary cutter and mat
  • Scissors
  • Fabric pins or clips
  • Quilt basting spray
  • Marking pen
  • Sewing machine
  • Steam iron

Directions:

Step 1

Cut your yellow and orange fabric into even sizes of rectangles (the quantity and size of each rectangle will depend on how large or small and how many petals you want), then cut a pair of square brown fabrics for the center of the flower. Spray the wrong side of each fabric, then lay them on top of the magic fabric, fuse, and flatten them using your hands. Sew random swirls, grids, or crisis cross patterns all over the top of the fused fabric making sure that the stitches are spaced about 1 to 2 thumbs apart from each other to give it enough room to puff. Set the brown fabrics aside, then start matching the other fabric into pairs with their right sides facing, you can pair them according to the same or opposite color. Draw the shape of your petals on the wrong side of the fabric making sure that their ends are pointing inside the fabric and their base at the raw edges. Stitch along the lines of the petals that you drew making sure to leave the edges open, then cut them outside the stitches, and turn them right side out through the open edges. Now get the pair of brown fabric, then put a slit at the center of one piece, and sew them together in a circle making sure that their right sides are still facing each other.

Step 2

Trim the fabric around just outside the stitches, then turn it right side out through the slit. Next, steam all of your stitched fabric making sure to keep the bottom of the iron away from the fabric and just let the steam curl them. Trim the bottom of each of your petals to even them out, then set them aside. Sew your background fabric with whatever pattern you want, sew, then steam, and square the fabric. Sew the fabric along the squared lines to lock the puff in place, then cut outside the stitches. Place the center of your flower wherever you want on the background piece, then assemble a row of petals around it, then pin them in place, and sew them except for the centerpiece. Add another layer of petals on top and overlap them a little bit inside of the row, then sew, and repeat until the desired appearance before stitching the center of the flower in place. Measure the size of the background fabric, then cut another background piece to the same measurement, and finish sewing your pillow making sure to stuff it with whatever stuffing you want.
