Do you love the rustic aesthetic with all those old, worn-out, and chippy wood? Then you will love this tutorial from Our Upcycled Life on Youtube, where she shows how to make new wood look old. Can you believe you only need hairspray and some paint for this project? It’s totally easy and quick! Make this a weekend project by watching the video tutorial below.

Materials:

  • wood
  • hairspray
  • cutter
  • chalk paint
  • other paint with the color of your choice
  • brush
  • spray bottle with water
  • white acrylic paint
  • stencil brush with a flat bottom
  • sandpaper

Directions:

Step 1

Grab the piece of wood that you want to distress. Make its edges look a little bit worn to give it a more authentic look. To do this, using a cutter, chip it out around the edges. Sand it down after. Next, paint the wood using chalk paint. After this, layer in the terracotta-colored paint but don’t paint the whole wood, just run the brush on top to give it a rustic look. (You can use any color you want.) Let it dry completely. After it dried, layer in the yellow-colored paint, just run the brush on top also, not covering the whole wood. Let it dry.

Step 2

Take the hairspray and coat the wood really well. (Make sure to coat it thickly.) Let it dry. Next, put a coat of white acrylic paint, then spread it using a brush. Let it completely dry. Spray some warm water around the corners of the wood, then using the stencil brush, wipe away some of the white acrylic paint. Keep spraying and wiping off until the desired look.
