1 – Vacuum your rug thoroughly

Start by vacuuming the top and bottom of your rug. Remove as much of that dry soil as you can before wetting the rug.

2 – Pretreat

Don’t mix your soap in your actual carpet cleaner tank itself. The reason behind this is that you’re never going to be able to flush the soap out of the rug, and it’s going to leave behind residue. Mix it up in a pump-up sprayer first. Use zep concentrated shampoo. Spray down the entire rug with the cleaner and let that sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Next, agitate it with a soft bristle brush.

3 – Clean and extract

Fill your carpet cleaner with warm water, and vacuum out all the dirt and cleaner. Make sure not to overwet the area. Check the actual extraction tool on the top of the machine and see what’s being sucked up as you go. If it’s starting to run clear, that means the rug is clean. You can also grab a nice clean white towel and gently scrub out a section of the fibers. If the dirt transfers to the white towel, continue flushing.

If you don’t have a carpet cleaning machine, you can also power wash the rug after applying the pre-treat and scrubbing it in or hose it down really well. After that, use a squeegee to push all that water off the surface of the rug.

4 – Get it dry quickly

Place a fan directly on the rug. You want to get as much airflow over the surface of the carpet so all the moisture inside can evaporate.
