Simply cleaning a shag rug the usual way you would clean any other rug is sometimes not effective because of the material the shag rug is made of. Instead of getting rid of all the dirt, all it does is trap all the leftover dirt in the back of the rug that will emulsify and start to stink over time. The good news is that you can still clean shag rugs on your own and expect satisfactory results as if it was done by a professional. Materials:

  • Shag rug
  • Water
  • Dish soap
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Vacuum
  • Leaf blower
  • Brush

Directions:

Step 1

Dry clean the shag rug first before proceeding to wet clean it. Grab your leaf blower, then start going over and as close as possible to the rug in a top, bottom, and side-to-side motion, and continue doing so until you’ve rid most of the soil out of the rug. If you don’t have a leaf blower, then a vacuum will do. Simply lay the rug with its right side facing down the floor, then run a vacuum at the back of the rug using a vacuum with a brush or beater bar attachment, and start going over the rug to knock the dirt out. Once done, flip the rug over, then vacuum the top of the rug to pull the dirt out, this step will help remove 60 to 70% of the dirt.

Step 2

Now, your rug is ready for wet cleaning, prepare a spray bottle and fill it with about 1 liter or 33 ounces of water, then add about a teaspoon of dish soap, 20 to 30ml or about 1 ounce of rubbing alcohol, and then give them a good shake to combine. Lightly spray the rug with the solution making sure to not put too much moisture, then lightly brush the area to agitate the soil out of the fiber, and vacuum the slurry.
