I’ve made many nine-patch blocks in different styles and versions before, but nothing tops this one by Teresa DownUnder on YouTube, which only incorporates a sashing in between. It’s an effortless addition and most would think this would not have any impact at all, but it adds just enough fun to the quilt block without separating the 9-patch apart completely.

Step 1

Cut 4 squares at 5×5 inches in green fabric, then 1 square at 5×5 inches in pink fabric, and 4 squares at 5×5 inches in white fabric. Place the pink square at the center, then lay the white squares on all sides of the pink square at the center, and fill the empty corners with the green squares.

Step 2

Chain piece the squares together, then stitch them per row and press both seams toward the darker print. Stitch the rows to each other, then nest the seams together, and press with swirling seams. Fold the block in half, then press the fold lightly, and cut it in half.

Step 3

Cut a strip of white fabric at 1×4 inches, then put it in between the halved block, and stitch them together, press the seams nicely. Fold the block in half in the opposite direction from the first sashing, then repeat the same steps you did earlier, and press the block nice and flat.
