Supplies Needed:
– Outer fabric for coffee cozy (cotton, quilting cotton, etc. – 1/4 yard)
– Lining fabric for cozy (same requirements as above – 1/4 yard)
– Insulating batting or fleece – 1/4 yard
– Sewing machine, thread, scissors, pins, button
– 1 elastic hair tie or small elastic loop
– Fabric glue
– An existing cardboard coffee cozy for pattern tracing
Instructions for Sewing a Coffee Cozy:
Step One
Use an existing cardboard cup cozy as a pattern template. Lay it right-side up on your chosen outer fabric and trace around it.
Step Two
Next, take a ruler and draw a 1/4″ seam allowance line around the outer edge of the traced pattern. Do this for both the outer and lining fabrics.
Step Three
Take your insulating batting or fleece and trace just the interior pattern piece (without seam allowance). Cut it out to use as filler between the outer and lining fabrics.
Step Four
For the lining fabric, iron the fusible fleece to the wrong side to add some structure.
Step Five
Pin the outer fabric pieces right sides together. Pin the lining pieces right sides together separately.
Step Six
Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew around the pinned outer pieces, leaving a 2-3″ gap for turning. Repeat for the lining pieces.
Step Seven
Turn both the outer and lining pieces right side out, using a pencil eraser or chopstick to gently push out the corners. Insert the insulating fleece between the outer and lining pieces.
Step Eight
Sandwich the lining inside the outer cozy layers, pinning in place with the right sides facing out. Ensure the opening gaps are aligned.
Step Nine
Add some fabric glue to the gap opening area. Loop an elastic hair tie or small elastic loop into this opening and clamp or clothespin until the glue dries.
Step Ten
Sew the opening closed with a top stitch close to the cozy edge. This will secure the elastic loop.
Step Eleven
Sew a button to the elastic loop to be the cozy’s closure.
Step Twelve
Lastly, slip your completed fabric coffee cozy around your cup and secure the button for the perfect cozy fit!
