When I saw this quilt block by Carol Thelen on YouTube, I knew I had to give it a go. This project looked challenging at first, but once you learn the steps, you’ll find out that it was super simple and easy, you don’t have to worry about messing it up, especially if you’re a beginner because the instructions are clear and very easy to follow that you surely won’t fail.

Materials:

  • Low-volume background fabric
  • Dark print fabric
  • Light print fabric
  • Contrasting fabric
  • Ruler
  • Marking pen, pencil, or chalk
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and a cutting mat
  • Fabric pins or clips
  • Needle and thread
  • Iron, for pressing
  • Sewing machine
  • Pattern (Click here to download the pattern)

Directions:

Step 1

Download and print the pattern, then cut the fabrics according to size, and line the wrong side of 2 large background squares diagonally from corner to corner. Lay the lined background squares on top of the light print squares, make sure their right sides are facing and edges are matching, then stitch them together on each side of the line with ¼ inch seam allowance, cut them in half, and press them open.

Step 2

Line the back of the small dark print squares diagonally from corner to corner, then lay one on the bottom right corner and another on the upper left corner, and make sure their right sides are facing. Stitch them on each side, then cut them in half, and press the seams open.

Step 3

Place a square on the remaining corner of the background fabric, then stitch ¼ inch on each side, cut in half, press them open, and cut off the nubs. Sew a contrasting fabric strip below each flying geese unit, then give them a good press, and start assembling all of the pieces making sure to refer to the diagram. Stitch them per row, then the rows to each other, and press the seams open as you go.
