It may look complicated with all the tiny details, but trust me, it’s easy to make! You’ll be surprised how simple the steps are. People will think you’ve spent days making this quilt when it only took you a day.

For this quilt, you will need a pack of solid and colored 10″ squares, also known as layer cakes. From two squares, you will be making 4 half-square triangles. Once you have them, form them into an hourglass, then make four cuts. All you need to do after that is arrange the small squares to form the block. That’s how easy it is. No need to cut and sew small squares together.

  • 1 pack of 10″ precuts colored
  • 1 pack 10″ precuts solid
  • 3/4 yards of inner border
  • 1 1/2 yard of outer border

How to Make Disappearing Hourglass Quilt

Step 1:

Take one colored square and one solid square. Place them right sides together. Sew all the way around the outside edge. Cut it diagonally in both directions. Now you have 4 half-square triangles. Set the seams, then press them open.

Step 2:

Take the 4 HSTs and arrange them into an hourglass just like in the photo below. Sew them together.

Step 3:

Measure your block and divide it into 3, which should be 4 1/4″. Cut the block on all edges with that measurement. Now you should have 9 squares.

Step 4:

Turn the corner blocks so the little triangles are on the outside just like in the photo below. Next, turn the middle block one time. Sew them together in rows of 3 first, then sew the rows together.
