These reusable sandwich bags are so cool! I get sick and tired of plastic bags for so many reasons. The waste they create, the awful things ending up in landfills and in the oceans of the Earth, it’s truly appalling. Not to even mention the chemicals inside the plastic leaching into your loved one’s food. There’s so much unknown and unnecessary stuff inside the plastic itself, way more than just BPA, and don’t forget all plastic is made from a petrochemical base, yuck! So there are a million reasons to make these reusable sandwich bags.

I used oilcloth to make my bags, oilcloth is one fabric I really love so much because you can wipe it clean. It’s a completely sanitary product and perfect for this type of project. You start with 2 pieces of oilcloth or material of your choice cut into 30-centimeter X 15-centimeter rectangles. You sew together down the long sides, then just fold up in the sandwich shape and sew the entire sides down. All that’s left is turning it right side out and topstitching edges. This is honestly one of the easiest sewing projects I’ve ever made.

I made some of these reusable sandwich bags for all my daughter’s teachers. They absolutely loved them because they are all staunch environmentalists and very committed to a clean planet. The Home Economics teacher invited me to do a quick seminar for the class the following Monday and I could hardly contain my excitement. I had all the oilcloth that the class would need so as a bonus I brought the pre-cut 30 centimeters by 15 centimeters rectangles to class with me that Monday. The students were so excited to make this project and it was so easy for them, it gave them all an immediate feeling of accomplishment.
