DIY Thanksgiving Centerpieces

1. Pumpkin Floral Vase Centerpiece

Maison de Pax

A faux pumpkin turned into a floral vase for the Thanksgiving table. (Image credit: Maison de Pax)

Rachel carved the top off a lightweight faux pumpkin and tucked a bowl of wet floral foam down inside, which is what turns it into a vase. She’d painted the pumpkin a soft blue green first to mimic the heirloom ones from her grocery store, then filled the foam with white and coral roses mixed with eucalyptus stems. A real pumpkin works too if you don’t want to store a painted one, but she likes that the faux version comes back every fall without wilting. Just leave the foam sitting a little above the rim so there’s room to tuck stems into the sides, not only the top. Rachel walks through the whole process at Maison de Pax.

2. 5 Minute Thanksgiving Centerpiece

5 Minute Thanksgiving Centerpiece, a project worth doubling for extra pieces and worth recreating for the season

The baron sparse nature of the Autumn season makes DIY table arrangements even more simple and easy. I had a beautiful old silver bowl that was my Great Grandmother’s, so I just filled it with a sparing, not overly lush melange of pinecones and mistletoe. It still needed something for height so I added some fake antlers I got on sale at Michael’s last year. It looked like an Architectural Digest!

3. Yarn Pumpkin Centerpiece

DIY Joy

Yarn Pumpkin Centerpiece, a satisfying weekend project worth the effort and one worth bookmarking from this list

Pick one up and there’s a tissue paper roll under all that yarn. This one is ours, so I can tell you exactly how it goes. Cut the roll in half, notch the edges and fold them in to round the ends, then wrap chunky chenille yarn through the center and back around until no cardboard shows. A cinnamon stick pushed into the middle holds it together and becomes the stem (eight of them and the room smells like a bakery). No knitting, no crochet, no sewing and no glue gun. Ten to fifteen minutes each, one roll makes two. Set them on faux leaves with pine cones and candles and nobody guesses the Thanksgiving centerpiece is cardboard. Our yarn pumpkin tutorial is at DIY Joy, with the notching photographed step by step.

4. Burlap Paint Can Centerpiece

The Homes I Have Made

Megan pulled these together the day before hosting her son’s baptism party, when she realized the tables needed something and she didn’t have time for her usual decor. She raided her craft stash for a handful of paint cans, wrapped burlap ribbon around each, and tied it into a full, foolproof bow using a method she adapted from another tutorial. The flowers are just grocery store bouquets, trimmed short and divided across the cans so nothing goes to waste. She recommends cylinder shaped containers since ribbon doesn’t wrap evenly around anything tapered. It’s simple enough to finish with a baby strapped to your chest, which is how she made hers at The Homes I Have Made.

5. Thanksgiving Food Centerpiece

Thanksgiving Food Centerpiece, a charming accent worth trying soon and a project worth doubling for extra pieces

A DIY organic dream awaited my vegan friends attending my Thanksgiving brunch. I laid out some parchment and used one of those vegetable trays from the grocery store and layered my vegetables all around, using a cauliflower as a centerpiece. I added a little baby’s breath at the edges which visually set the whole thing off. It made our vegan dinner look gorgeous and it took less than a half an hour to have this camera-friendly centerpiece.

6. Rustic Wood Table Runner

Rustic Wood Table Runner, worth adding to the seasonal decor rotation and quick enough to finish in an afternoon

Everyone loves rustic wood during the entire Autumn season. I especially love the idea of using a long plank as a table runner and there are many ways you can do this. If you have an old shutter or bench top that will do nicely, if not you can get a new plank from Home Depot for very little money. I sanded and stained mine and just laid it down in the center of my Thanksgiving table. I heard my husband bragging about my DIY craft abilities to his boss, it was such a compliment.

7. Pumpkin Leaves Centerpiece

Caitlin Marie Design

White pumpkins and eucalyptus styled with a brass candlestick for a cozy Thanksgiving table. (Image credit: Caitlin Marie Design)

This cottage farmhouse table centers on a trio of white pumpkins they’d already been styling earlier that fall, brought back out and surrounded with faux eucalyptus stems and grocery-store baby’s breath tucked in around the base. A brass candlestick, one of their go-to decor pieces styled a different way each time, sits alongside stacked books tied with twine, an unexpected filler they added just to fill out empty space on the table. The silver plate chargers underneath are a Dollar Tree find at a little over a dollar each, part of keeping the whole look budget friendly, and even the table runner is a trick: it’s really just an inexpensive throw blanket. Caitlin Marie Design put the full cottage farmhouse tablescape together as one of several low-cost ways to dress a Thanksgiving table.

8. Basket Thanksgiving Centerpiece

Basket Thanksgiving Centerpiece, worth adding to the seasonal decor rotation and worth recreating for the season

The best thing about DIY crafts is that you can repurpose just about any of your crafts you’ve already made. I took an old Easter basket and updated its seasonal relevance by filling it with lovely Autumn flowers from my garden and artificial leaves I bought from Michael’s craft store. This centerpiece has been on my table since mid-September and has gotten my whole family geared up for Halloween and Thanksgiving.

9. Simple Thanksgiving Table Setting

The Palette Muse

Simple Thanksgiving Table Setting, one worth bookmarking from this list and a project worth repeating every year
A simple Thanksgiving table setting built from a few small pieces down the runner. (Image credit: The Palette Muse)

Meredith’s trick is height, or the lack of it. She keeps everything low so people can talk over the table, then floats a collection of small pieces down the runner, speckled bowls, little crocks, a couple of candles, which reads as a centerpiece without the tower. Pick three colors first and almost anything you already own will match, mismatched plates included. There’s no tablecloth (the reason is laundry, and it’s hard to argue with) and drinks move to a station in the kitchen. My own dinner party rule is a few things done really well instead of twenty, so her advice to set the table a day early fits right in. The Palette Muse has the rest of it, including how to hand out jobs when guests ask if they can help.

10. Gold Basket Pumpkin Centerpiece

House by Hoff

Gold Basket Pumpkin Centerpiece, a popular choice on this list and a favorite thanksgiving centerpiece idea worth copying
A gold seagrass basket styled with blush pumpkins for a boho fall table. (Image credit: House by Hoff)

This one grew out of a set of blush colored pumpkins she spotted at Marshall’s, which pulled her fall table toward a softer, more boho palette than she usually goes for. The gold seagrass basket wasn’t new either, it’d been sitting on her table for months, so she just swapped the greenery inside it and built the display around it. Keeping everything neutral means the table doesn’t get hit with a wall of loud orange pumpkins, the kind she jokes about avoiding at Hobby Lobby. A small brass mister and a few ceramic pumpkins in blush and white finish it off without much clutter. House by Hoff put this together as part of a fall tablescape blog hop with other home decor bloggers.

11. Rustic Dough Bowl Centerpiece

The Turquoise Home

Rustic Dough Bowl Centerpiece, a piece that looks far pricier than it is and easy enough for a first try at home
A wooden dough bowl layered with pastel pumpkins and dried florals. (Image credit: The Turquoise Home)

Laura found this oversized wooden dough bowl, twenty six inches long, at a local antique store and knew right away it needed to become a centerpiece. She layered floral foam in the bottom, then anchored foam pumpkins on wood skewers along with jewel toned faux hydrangea, dried astilbe and a pinecone or two. She’d tried cheaper hydrangea stems from Hobby Lobby first but the quality wasn’t close, so she splurged on better ones and says it’s made all the difference. If your bowl or tray runs deeper than a flat dough bowl, she suggests propping mason jars inside instead of relying on foam alone. Laura walks through her full method at The Turquoise Home.

13. Pilgrim Hat Basket Centerpiece

A thrifted basket transformed into a pilgrim hat centerpiece. (Image credit: Sadie Seasongoods)

She’s been thrifting and upcycling baskets for more than a decade, but this one caught her eye because flipped upside down it looked exactly like a pilgrim hat. A quick wipe down with a damp cloth and a spritz of Lysol got the dust off before she wrapped fall ribbon around the base and hot glued the ends in place. A single faux blue chrysanthemum, clipped flat at the back, becomes the hat’s buckle once it’s glued over the ribbon seam. The whole transformation didn’t take much effort at all, which is exactly her favorite kind of project. Sadie Seasongoods built the rest of this year’s tablescape around it as part of a collaboration with the Charlotte Region ReStores.

15. Printable Thanksgiving Placemats

Rhythms of Play

Printable Thanksgiving Placemats, easy enough for a first try at home and quick enough to finish in an afternoon
A thankful turkey coloring page glued onto a paper placemat. (Image credit: Rhythms of Play)

This DIY placemat starts as a printable your guests color in, which is a smarter material than it sounds. Nell prints the thankful turkey sheet on cardstock, trims along the dotted line, then runs a glue stick over the back and centers it on a store bought harvest leaf placemat. The turkey sits in the middle with empty boxes fanning out around it, and everybody writes or draws one thing they’re grateful for while the turkey rests. Crayons, colored pencils, markers and gel pens all work. I’ve volunteered to bring the group craft to a lot of events, and the one that always works is the one people can start the second they sit down. Rhythms of Play has the step by step.

17. Last Minute Thanksgiving Centerpiece

Bless’er House

Gold aspen leaf stems in a stoneware jug, ready in minutes. (Image credit: Bless'er House)

Lauren keeps this one about as simple as a centerpiece gets, just two gold aspen leaf stems stuck into a glazed stoneware jug and set in the middle of the table. The leaves are sparse enough that the arrangement doesn’t look overstuffed, and the stems themselves are pliable so you can bend them into whatever shape fills the vase best. She includes it among her favorite five minute fall ideas, the kind you can throw together right before guests show up. It’s proof that you don’t need a full floral arrangement to make a table feel dressed for the season. Lauren rounds up several more no fuss options like this one over at Bless’er House.

18. DIY Thanksgiving Centerpiece

Kenarry

DIY Thanksgiving Centerpiece, one worth bookmarking from this list and a project worth doubling for extra pieces
Glass vases layered with dried beans around a candle and tied with raffia. (Image credit: Trish Sutton for Kenarry)

A glass vase, four kinds of dried beans, a candle and a length of raffia. That is the entire supply list for this Thanksgiving centerpiece. Trish pours one bean in at a time, lentils, split peas, black beans and small red kidney beans, pressing each layer flat before the next goes in, which is the step that keeps the stripes from sliding into each other. The candle is a short one, so the flame sits well above the beans, and it gets pushed into the top layer until the beans hug the base. Raffia ties around the glass and you’re done. Two dollars of pantry beans, and nobody at your table will guess the vase filler came out of the cupboard. Trish Sutton shared the full how to at Kenarry.

19. Thanksgiving Table Centerpiece

The Lilypad Cottage

Wicker baskets filled with cabbage, artichokes and fall flowers. (Image credit: The Lilypad Cottage)

These wicker baskets usually hold fresh herbs all summer, but by October most hadn’t survived the season, except the rosemary and parsley, which were still going strong. A trip to Trader Joe’s turned up a few mini flowering plants in fall colors for two dollars each, and she tucked those in around what was left of the herbs. She’d also watched the cabbages in her outdoor window boxes start to wilt once the snow hit Michigan, so she pulled a few of those in too along with some artichokes. Because it’s all still planted instead of cut, the arrangement should hold up until Christmas decorating takes over. The Lilypad Cottage put this together in an afternoon using mostly what she already had.

21. Stunning Thanksgiving Centerpiece

The Design Twins

Stunning Thanksgiving Centerpiece, worth recreating for the season and a piece that looks far pricier than it is
Alabaster candelabras and a white ceramic pumpkin on a glamorous Thanksgiving table. (Image credit: The Design Twins)

Julie set this table three weeks before Thanksgiving, which is exactly why there isn’t a fresh flower on it. A plaid table scarf goes down on the diagonal so the wood still shows and the folds ripple, then her antique alabaster candelabras, then a tobacco basket of small pumpkins with a wooden pedestal in the center holding one white ceramic pumpkin. The dessert plates were her grandmother’s, and their gold edges tie into the copper chargers. Her layering order is placemat, charger, largest plate, napkin, salad plate, bowl. I get put on decor committees because people have learned I will go overboard and never stop, so a Thanksgiving centerpiece with lit tapers and crystal is my natural habitat. The Design Twins has the whole how to.

22. Gilded Bowl Candle Centerpiece

The Navage Patch

Gilded Bowl Candle Centerpiece, a favorite thanksgiving centerpiece idea worth copying and an idea worth saving for later
A salvaged wooden bowl gilded and filled with floating candles. (Image credit: The Navage Patch)

This one started at the dump, where Handan spotted a busted antique hutch with fancy spindle trim worth saving before it got tossed with the construction debris. Her husband cut a new maple base and routed it to match the spindle’s pattern, then found an old wooden salad bowl to sit on top. Instead of the usual polyurethane finish, he tried boiled linseed oil outside, wiping on a fresh coat daily for five days until it built a soft satin sheen. He notes that oil soaked rags can catch fire if they’re balled up and thrown in the trash, so they need to be laid flat to dry instead. Handan gilded the inside last, and it’s the floating candles that finish the centerpiece at The Navage Patch.

23. DIY Wooden Lantern Centerpiece

Do Dodson Designs

DIY Wooden Lantern Centerpiece, worth adding to the seasonal decor rotation and an idea worth trying this season
Scrap wood lanterns with flameless candles for a cozy centerpiece. (Image credit: Do Dodson Designs)

These lanterns started as a pile of scrap wood, pine and cedar pieces she’d been saving because she can’t quite bring herself to toss a piece with good character. She cut everything down on a miter saw, glued and pin nailed the frames together, then sanded the edges before staining them in a picklin’ white gel stain that keeps some wood grain showing through. Flameless remote control candles go inside instead of real flames, so they’re safe to leave burning on a porch or coffee table. She says the imperfections in reclaimed wood are part of the charm, not something to sand away completely. Do Dodson Designs has the full cut list if you want to build your own pair from scraps.

24. A Table For Thanksgiving

Driven by Decor

A Table For Thanksgiving, one worth bookmarking from this list and a satisfying weekend project worth the effort

Kris’s table is five small moves instead of one big project, and the first one I would steal is the drink garnish: a sprig of rosemary poked through three cranberries, sitting in every water glass. She rolls kraft paper down the middle as a runner, writes each guest’s name at their place and leaves room for them to add what they’re thankful for (colored pencils or crayons, not markers, unless you want the table decorated too). Short on matching plates? Layer a salad plate from one set onto a dinner plate from another, then flip the combination for the rest of your guests and it reads as deliberate. Driven by Decor has all five ideas.

25. Cornucopia Thanksgiving Centerpiece

Design Dazzle

Cornucopia Thanksgiving Centerpiece, a thanksgiving centerpiece idea that looks far pricier than it is
A basket overflowing with squash and greenery like a cornucopia. (Image credit: Design Dazzle)

This centerpiece leans into the shape of a classic cornucopia even without an actual horn, thanks to a large round basket spilling over with local winter squash, ornamental cabbages and dusty miller. Most of what’s piled inside is real, straight from local produce, though she mixed in a few faux succulents since she can’t resist adding them somewhere. Layering multiple chargers under each place setting adds texture without much extra cost. She also tucked a small printable tag at each spot so guests could jot down what they’re grateful for before the meal. Design Dazzle put this together in partnership with Wayfair, and the free tag is on her site.

26. Granny Chic Thanksgiving Tablescape

The Gathered Home

Granny Chic Thanksgiving Tablescape, an idea worth trying this season and quick enough to finish in an afternoon
A marble vase of roses and a mossy pumpkin cake stand on a mixed pattern table. (Image credit: The Gathered Home)

She calls this her granny chic table, mixing a bold vintage floral tablecloth with amber glass, patterned plates and just about every thrifted find she’s collected over the years. The pumpkin display on the cake stand took her all of five minutes, just sheet moss topped with mini pumpkins, gourds and a couple of faux succulents. A marble vase of orange roses sits on a stack of vintage books nearby, since it’s an easy way to add height without a taller vase. Even the cutlery gets a rustic touch since she picked up biodegradable birchwood forks and knives from Michael’s instead of plastic. The Gathered Home leans all the way into mixing patterns, and it doesn’t need to match perfectly to work.

27. Thanksgiving Inspired Gold Table Decor

It All Started With Paint

Thanksgiving Inspired Gold Table Decor, easy enough for a first try at home and an idea worth trying this season
Brass lanterns, crystal and a printable pumpkin place card in gold and neutral tones. (Image credit: It All Started With Paint)

Linda held this table to four colors, orange, green, gold and neutral, then let the metal carry it. Brass lanterns run down the center with candles burning inside, cut crystal catches the light, and white plates sit on hammered chargers. The greenery is a few stems in a clear vase, not an arrangement. The finishing piece is a small folded place card with a watercolor pumpkin on it, and she made that one plus a fall leaf version as free printables. She shot these Thanksgiving decorating ideas as the last Thanksgiving in a house her family had for twenty eight and a half years. Photograph what you make, all of it. There is a long list of things I wish I had pictures of. It All Started With Paint has both printables.

28. Thanksgiving Table Runner

Taryn Whiteaker

Thanksgiving Table Runner, a favorite thanksgiving centerpiece idea worth copying and an idea worth saving for later
A painted metallic striped table runner that carries from Thanksgiving into Christmas. (Image credit: Taryn Whiteaker)

Taryn’s runner is white duck cloth, one of her favorite materials, though a painter’s drop cloth does the same job. She cut hers 16 inches by 110, and a standard six or seven feet is fine. Press the fabric before you tape it or it buckles underneath and the paint creeps. She laid the tape down by eye with varied gaps instead of measuring a pattern, then left a few of the openings unpainted, which is the decision that keeps it from going busy. One place I won’t go bargain is paint. The cheap stuff has less pigment and more filler, so you’ll do four coats and still get a weak stripe. Her post says it works for Thanksgiving and Christmas both, and the DIY tutorial is at Taryn Whiteaker.

Lemon Thistle

Nature Inspired Thanksgiving Tablescape, worth recreating for the season and easy enough for a first try at home
Dried bunny tail grass and a strawflower knotted into a linen napkin for a natural Thanksgiving table. (Image credit: Lemon Thistle)

Not one stem on this table needs water, which is the whole trick. Colleen grouped bunny tail grasses (florists sell them dried) into three small thrifted vessels down the middle of a round table, airy enough that serving dishes still fit. Then the napkins: fold corner to corner, roll loosely, tie a knot, scrunch it to one side of the plates and tuck a dried strawflower in. Because it’s all dried, you can set this fall centerpiece up days early and it looks the same on Thursday, which is the only deadline in November that counts. My mom used to work on seasonal decor projects with me, so I’m partial to anything I can finish ahead and leave alone. Lemon Thistle has two more fall table decor ideas using the same place setting.

33. Coastal Thanksgiving Table

Back Porch Bliss

Coastal Thanksgiving Table, one worth bookmarking from this list and worth adding to the seasonal decor rotation
Dried hydrangea in milk bottles with sand dollar gratitude cards. (Image credit: Back Porch Bliss)

The centerpiece here is dried hydrangea and sticks from her own yard, in vintage milk bottles that sit inside their original metal carrier. She leaned into a coastal palette with starfish for place cards and sand dollars that double as gratitude cards, hand painted along the edges in classic blue. Guests are invited to write what they’re thankful for on the sand dollars during the meal, then hang them on the centerpiece as a keepsake. The table is set with a coastal stoneware pattern passed through three generations of her family. Back Porch Bliss built the whole tablescape around gratitude, and it’s the handmade sign in the middle that ties it together.

34. Paper Pumpkin Centerpiece

Craftaholics Anonymous

Handmade paper pumpkins nestled in berry twigs. (Image credit: Craftaholics Anonymous)

Linda originally whipped these paper pumpkins up after Woman’s Day asked her to build a Thanksgiving centerpiece using her signature design for a magazine feature. Each pumpkin is rolled from strips of festive harvest scrapbook paper, then nestled into a pile of berry twigs with a bit of burlap tucked underneath for texture. She’s found they work just as well scattered across place settings or piled into a hurricane vase as they do sitting in the middle of the table. It’s a genuinely cheap project since it doesn’t call for a single fresh flower or real pumpkin. Craftaholics Anonymous has the full step by step for folding your own.
