Searching for your next quilt project? If you are, I have a wonderful suggestion for you! This summer stars picnic quilt by Missouri Star is the perfect pattern for this season. Isn’t it lovely? I like that it is different from all the patterns I did before. Most of the time, the blocks are arranged alternately, not in rows like this one, which makes it so refreshing and new for me.

This pattern combines two simple blocks – the wonky star block and the summer in the park block. If you haven’t heard of the second block before, check this tutorial: Summer in the Park Quilt Using Jelly Rolls. You will easily finish this quilt as both blocks are easy to make. The star blocks don’t need to be perfect that is why they are called wonky stars. Give this pattern a try and use it for your next picnic!
Remove four strips of yellow from your pack. Reserve for the stars.
Make the summer in the park block. Take one light and one dark strips. Sew them together on the side with a quarter of an inch seam allowance. Press them open. Repeat with another pair. Sew the two pairs together on the top and bottom to make a tube.
Take the slotted trimmer and place on the folded 4 unit strip. Line on the stitch line and cut on the diagonal sides. Rotate the trimmer for the next one, then cut. Repeat for the whole strip set. Press them open.
Arrange four blocks just like in the photo below. Sew them together like a four patch. Make 16 pieces. You need four blocks for each row.
Make the wonky star. Take the four yellow strips and cut into 2 1/2″ squares. You need 5 yellow squares and 8 pieces of 2 1/2″ white squares. Take 4 pieces of yellow and 4 pieces of white. Place the yellow on top of a white. The corner of the yellow should be on the middle of the white. Sew it in place. Repeat for the remaining 3 pairs. Press them open. Cut the excess. Use the excess pieces to make the other legs. Arrange all the squares like a nine patch. Sew them together. Make 14 pieces.
There will be 7 stars in one row.
Arrange 1 row of the summer picnic blocks, followed by one row of the wonky stars. Next, 2 rows of the summer picnic blocks, followed by 1 row of wonky stars, then 1 row of summer picnic blocks. Add the inner border and the outer border.
