In this step by step tutorial, Fat Quarter Shop demonstrates how to make this seemingly hard quilt project. You’ll only need some Valentine’s Day-themed fabrics, and you’re good to go! Materials:

- 4 yards background
- 21 – 10″ squares (large hearts)
- 14 – 10″ squares (small hearts)
- 5/8 yard binding
- 3 3/4 yards backing
Cutting:
Background:
- 42 – 4 1/2″ squares (fabric A)
- 42 – 4 1/2″ squares (fabric B)
- 168 – 2 /2″ squares (fabric C)
- 168 – 1 1/2″ squares (fabric D)
- 35 – 1 1/2″ x 8 1/2″strips (fabric E)
- 9 – 1 1/2″ x WOF strips (fabric F)
- 7 – 2 1/2″ x WOF strips (fabric G)
Large Hearts:
- 2 – 4 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ rectangles from each (42 total) – fabric H
Small Hearts:
- 6 – 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles from each (84 total) – fabric I
Binding:
- 7 – 2 1/2″ x WOF strips – fabric J
Directions:
Step 1
To start, cut all the fabric requirements and label them accordingly. Next, get a fabric H rectangle and a fabric C square. Draw a line from corner to corner on the fabric C square, put it in the top left corner, and stitch directly on the line. After sewing, trim 1/4″ away and press open. Take another fabric C. put it on the top right, pin it in place, and stitch. Next, take a fabric B, draw a line diagonally, and stitch it directly on the line as well. Trim a 1/4″ away and press open. The left unit of the heart is now finished.
Step 2
Next, make the right unit. Take another fabric H, and add two fabrics C on top, and one fabric B at the bottom just like you did on the left unit. Stitch them directly on the line, trim 1/4″ away, and press according to the pattern. Once you have both units, sew them together to complete the heart block. Make 21 of these.
Step 3
Now, make the small heart unit. You’ll do exactly the same just with different fabrics. Get a fabric I, put two fabrics D on top of it, and a fabric C on the bottom. Sew on those diagonal lines directly. Trim 1/4″ away, then press according to the pattern. Make another unit to complete the heart shape.
Step 4
Now, make a four-patch using two smaller hearts and two fabric As. Once you’re done, assemble the quilt top and lay out the heart units, inserting sashings in between blocks, and in between rows.
