Dresden Sunburst Quilt With Jenny Doan

Easy Dresden Sunburst Quilt

• 1 pack of 10″ precuts
• 3/4 yard of sunburst middles
• 3 yards of quilting fabric or 1 1/2 yards of 108″ fabric
• 1 1/2 yards outer border
• dresden plate
• simple wedge tool

How to Make a Dresden Sunburst Quilt

Step 1:

On your 10″ square, cut 3 pieces of dresden blades. You need 20 pieces for each dresden sunburst.

Step 2:

Get one piece of dresden blade, fold the wide end in half right sides together, and sew right across the top. Fold the sewn part over to make a point and press it down. Repeat with the others.

Step 3:

Make the sunburst. Cut 20 pieces of triangles using the simple wedge ruler on your sunburst middle fabric. Fold them in half.

Step 4:

Get one sewn blade and lay one wedge on top just like in the photo below. Lay a next sewn dresden blade on top, right sides together, and pin them together. Sew on the edge from the top. Repeat for the other pieces, then sew them together until you form a circle. Press all the wedges going in the same direction.

Step 5:

Cut your background square which is 2″ bigger than your plate. Fold it in fourths to find the center. Place the finished circle in the middle and pin it in place. Draw 2 circles from the same fabric of the sunburst that is large enough to cover the points and cut it out making sure there is an excess. Sew them together on the line and trim the edges. Make a little cut in the center of one side and flip it right side out. Press the edges.

Step 6:

Iron a piece of heat n’ bond on the center circle and press with the iron. Peel it off and glue it on the center of your Dresden circle. Do a blanket stitch around the circle and the edge of the dresden plate.

You need 4 pieces of this finished block. Sew them together in a four-patch. Add a 1 1/2″ inner border, then a 6″ outer border.
