Quilting is a relaxing hobby for me and I always have a project ready after I’m done with the other. A few weeks ago, I did a fun and colorful quilt that is rather simple and neat, so this time, I wanted to try something that’s very busy-looking and creative. When I stumbled upon this video tutorial by Jordan Fabrics on YouTube, I was at first, very intimidated and thought that it might be too difficult for me. However, after watching the tutorial and learning the whole process, I was surprised to know that it was actually super easy that even beginners can give it a try!

Materials:

  • 35 pieces of layer cake or squares @ 10 inches
  • 7/8 yard of accent fabric
  • 5/8 yard of sashing fabric, optional
  • ½ yard of binding fabric
  • 3 yards of backing fabric
  • Marking pen, pencil, or chalk
  • Ruler
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and a cutting mat
  • Needle and thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Pattern (Click here to download the pattern for free)

Directions:

Step 1

Lay 2 different layer cake squares together with their right sides up and edges matching, then cut them through with a slight angle into two, then switch the fabrics with each other as shown in the video, and stitch an accent strip on one side of the cut fabric with a ¼ inch seam allowance. Finger-press the seam nicely, then sew the other part of the block on the other side of the accent strip and repeat this step with the remaining layer cake squares.

Step 2

Stack 2 different blocks that you’ve pieced together with their right sides up and edges matching, then cut them across with a slight angle, and trade the pieces to form the blocks. Using the same technique as you did earlier with the accent strip, sew the pieces together with a ¼ inch seam allowance, then press the seam allowances nicely, and trim the blocks into 9½ inches square. Once done with all the blocks, lay them into 7 rows with 5 blocks each, then sew the rows together, and press the seams in alternate directions. You can add sashing in between each block if you want, then once done, quilt however you want, and bind.
