This beautiful coaster sewing project by Minki Kim on YouTube teaches you how to incorporate the Christmas spirit into your fabric using scrap materials. The technique used in this project is surprisingly easy and fun and even beginners can do it on the first try.

Materials:

  • Main fabric
  • Fabric scraps
  • Lining fabric
  • Batting fabric
  • Needle and thread
  • Embroidery thread
  • Fusible interfacing fabric
  • Iron, for pressing
  • Sewing machine

Directions:

Step 1

Gather small strips of fabric scraps, then piece them together at the center of a 7*7 inches cotton batting, lay the interfacing fabric on top with its glue side facing down, and draw a long triangle shape making sure that the pieced fabrics are centered. Take the interfacing, lay it on top of the right side of the base fabric, and sew along the traced line.

Step 2

Cut a hole at the center of the triangle, then start cutting it off leaving about a ¼-inch seam allowance at the side and bottom, and notch the corners. Push the excess interfacing towards the wrong side of the base fabric, then crease the seams nicely, and place the piece on top of the pieced fabric scraps making sure they are centered. Give it a nice press to fuse them together, then fold a piece of fabric for the tree’s leg, and sew it in place as shown in the video.

Step 3

Lay the 6½*6½-inch lining fabric on top of the main fabric with their right sides facing together, then sew around the sides with a ¼-inch seam allowance leaving a gap for turning later, cut off the excess, and notch the corners. Push the fabric right side out through the gap, then poke the corners nicely, tuck the seams of the gap as well, and then give them a good press. Hand stitch around the tree using a dark-colored embroidery thread and you’re done!
