Materials:

  • Fabric strips
  • Bias tape
  • Cotton batting
  • Backing fabric
  • Scissors
  • Marking pen or pencil
  • Fabric clips or pins
  • Needle and thread
  • Iron, for pressing
  • Sewing machine
  • Leaf template

Directions:

Step 1

Sew the fabric strips together to create a 9-inch square block, and then set it aside. Download and print out the template to 105% large, then trace it out on cardstock or regular paper and cut. Make 2 cardstock templates, then cut one in half lengthwise, and draw diagonal leaf lines all over. Place the half template on the fabric strip square making sure to line them up nicely, then trace the pattern around, and cut with a seam allowance all around the edges. Lay together with their right sides facing and straight edges matching, then them together, and press it open.

Step 2

Lay the backing fabric with its wrong side facing up, then place 2 to 3 layers of batting on top, and lay the leaf patchwork at the very top with its right side facing up. You can use some spray adhesive before you proceed to sew. Now, quilt them together however you like or topstitch along the leaf lines, then trace the whole leaf template on top and sew just along the inside of the traced lines. Once done sewing, trim the excess fabric off really close to the stitching line, then use the bias tape to bind the edges of the potholder together, and make sure to add an excess bias tape at the top for the hanging loop. Finish sewing the hanging loop and you’re done, you can now make another piece!
