Materials:

  • old flannels
  • some fabric (for the back)
  • ruler
  • marking tool
  • pins
  • scissors

Directions:

Step 1

Cut three squares (12.5 x 12.5″) on each flannel print and nine backing fabric (12.5 x 12.5″). To start, place the backing fabric right sides down, then a printed piece, right sides up. Get a long ruler and a marking tool to draw from corner to corner in both directions to form an X. Secure the two layers with pins, then sew right along the lines you drew. Repeat this step until you have nine sets done. Next, lay out the pieces to determine the pattern you want. Place a pin in the first block of each row to help keep everything in order.

Step 2

After this, one row at a time, place the two blocks wrong sides together, lining up the edges. Sew down one side to attach with a half-inch seam allowance. Next, open it up, place the wrong sides together with the third piece, and sew it to attach. Repeat this step with all three remaining rows and lay them back out in order. After this, sew the rows together the same way as the blocks. Place the wrong sides together and sew with a half-inch seam allowance. Once all the rows are together, sew a seam around the outer edge at a half-inch. Snip all the seam allowances and the outer border about every half-inch. Wash and dry the blanket at a time or two once you’re done to loosen up the cut edges and make them soft and then you’re finally done.
