How To Sew A Popsicle Mug Rug

Materials:
- Batting, cut to 7*10 inches
- Sewable fusible adhesive
- Basting spray
Fabrics
- 1 piece of 7*10″, for the back of the mug rug
- 1 piece of 4½*7½”, for the backing of the applique in the center of the mug rug
- 2 pieces of 1½*7½”, for the top and bottom border
- 2 pieces of 6½*1½”, for the side borders
- 1 piece of 2¼ width, for binding
Directions:
Step 1
Draw and cut the popsicle pattern out, then trace them onto the paper side of the fusible adhesive, and create three copies of each piece for the popsicle, shadows, and sticks. Cut the pieces accordingly leaving a slight seam allowance around each fusible adhesive, then fuse the pattern pieces onto the wrong side of the fabric chosen for each piece, and cut out each pattern along the drawn line. Remove the paper at the back, then position the applique pieces onto the applique background piece leaving a ½” seam allowance around each piece. Position the three popsicles evenly, then fuse them into place.

Step 2
You can either sew all around the applique pieces at this point or wait until the quilting step, if you want to sew around now, then straight stitch or narrow zigzag around each applique stitch. Sew the top and bottom border pieces to the center appliqued fabric piece with a ¼” seam allowance. Press the seam allowance toward the darker pieces, then sew the final side borders with a ¼” seam allowance, and press toward the darker fabrics. Place the backing fabric wrong side up and lightly spray with basting spray. Place the batting on top and then lightly spray the batting with the basting spray, then quilt the mug rug as desired, and if you did not previously sew around the applique pieces, now is the time to do so. Lastly, trim the quilt sandwich to 6*9 inches.
