This 50-40 or fight freestyle quilt is one of the most beautiful patterns I have ever seen, and Jenny Doan from Missouri Star definitely made this design easier. It may look like a complicated block, but it’s actually not – even beginners can easily follow the steps. Watch the video below for full instructions.

Take one 10″ square and cut it into four pieces of five-inch squares by cutting them in the middle in both directions. Next, cut two pieces of five-inch background squares and place them on top of the two colored five-inch squares. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on each stack and sew 1/4″ away from the line on both sides. Cut directly on the line, trim into 4 1/2″ squares, and press them open.
Place a 4 1/2″ center block in the middle and put the half square triangles on each corner. Fill the rest with 4 1/2″ white blocks. Sew them together in rows first. Once done, sew the rows together. You need 12 of this block.
Start doing the corner blocks – four patches. Take a 10″ square and cut it into four pieces of 5″ squares. Get two of those and place a 5″ background square on top of each one. Sew them on the sides (do not sew the top and bottom). Once done, cut them in half, and press them open. Place them on top of each other, right sides together, with the colors opposite. Sew the sides again and cut them in half to make four patches.
Make the star legs. Cut four pieces of 5″ squares from your background and cut them in half to get 2 1/2″ by 5″ rectangles. Next, you need four pieces of 4 1/2″ squares of the background color. Take your 2 1/2″ by 5″ rectangle and place it on top of the 4 1/2″ square just like in the photo below. Sew it on, press it open, and repeat with the other side to make the leg. Trim off the excess and repeat to make four pieces.
Arrange the star legs in a cross, with the points pointing towards the middle. The corner squares are the four patches with the dark colors touching the white star legs. The center square should be the same color as the four patches. Sew them together into a block and press open. You need 13 of this block.
