Materials:

  • layer cake
  • fat quarter, for accent
  • rotary cutter
  • ruler
  • cutting mat
  • sewing machine

Directions:

Step 1

Cut the fat quarter into forty-two 2 1/2″ squares, then for the layer cakes, cut one 2 1/2″ x 9 1/2″ rectangle followed by one 7 1/2″ x 9 1/2″ rectangle. Once everything is cut, take one 2 1/2″ x 9 1/2″ rectangle and one 2 1/2″ accent square. On the wrong side of the square, draw a line from corner to corner, then place them right sides together on the right of the rectangle. Sew directly on the line, then cut a 1/4″ away from the sewn line. Press open afterwards.

Step 2

Lastly, take the 2 1/2″ x 9 1/2″ rectangle, piece them, then sew it to the bottom of the 7 1/2″ x 9 1/2″ to complete the quilt block. Repeat these steps until you have all your 42 quilt blocks. Once you have all your blocks, lay them, rotating each to 90 degrees in a 6″ x 7″ block layout. Sew the blocks together to form rows, then sew those rows together to complete the quilt top.
