Materials:

  • 2 (5″ x 5″) charm packs (or 11 fat quarters)
  • 1 fat quarter
  • 1 1/2 yards of white fabric
  • 2 1/2 yards of background fabric
  • 5/8 yard binding fabric
  • 4 1/2 yards backing fabric
  • 74″ x 85″ batting

Directions:

Step 1

Take your 5″ squares, place them right sides together with your background squares, draw a diagonal line, then stitch a 1/4″ seam away from each side of the drawn line. Once done sewing, cut right on the line, then trim them down to 4 1/2″. After this, start arranging the pieces to make the pinwheel, sew them into rows, then sew those rows together to finish the pinwheel block.

Step 2

Next, make the triangles. Cut some rectangles first, then cut them at the diagonal to form the triangles. Now, take one of your triangles, and line it up on top of the pinwheel block, making sure everything is aligned on the left side. Then, bring it right sides together, then stitch a partial seam, stopping an inch or two before the end. After sewing, press it open, then rotate the block. Add another triangle, aligning it on the left side also, then sew it all the way across and press open. Keep rotating the block until you finish attaching triangles around. Once you have sewn the last triangle, you can now go back to the first triangle and sew it all the way across, and press open. After this, trim off the excess and square up your block.
