Cut a few inches of the base of the lettuce and place it in a glass of water. You can also use a bowl or anything to prop up the lettuce. Fill the container with a half-inch or an inch just to cover the bottom of the lettuce. Do not fully submerge it in water.
That’s it. Just leave it by the window sill if there isn’t too much difference between the temperature indoors and outdoors. If there is, place it under grow lights.
The next day you will notice the water turned a little bit yellow. Pour it out and change the water in the container. Do it every day or so when the water looks dirty.
Keep it growing for a few weeks until you notice some roots on the bottom of the lettuce. You can now harvest the lettuce that you have grown to make some salad. After harvesting, transfer and plant it in soil for it to fully grow.
You can also do it with other vegetables like basil, lettuce, carrots, green onion, garlic, celery, cilantro, bok choy, sweet potato, leeks, rosemary, and lemon balm.
