This recipe only requires a couple of ingredients–butter, all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, table salt, baking soda, and buttermilk. Most of these are probably already in your pantry.
Curious about the name? The dough is simply “dropped” from the spoon directly onto the prepared pan, rather than being rolled out. Serve these treats with gravy, jam or jelly, pimento cheese, butter, meats, or chili.
Place a rack in the center of your oven and preheat it to 450F. Take a baking sheet and line it with parchment paper. Set aside for later.
Slice the butter into pieces and place in a microwave-safe bowl. Place in the microwave and heat in 15-second intervals, stirring in between, until fully melted. Set it aside to cool completely.
In a large bowl, add flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda. Whisk until well combined.
Pour the buttermilk into a medium-sized bowl. While whisking, slowly pour melted butter until thoroughly combined. Don’t worry if the butter separates a bit, that is fine.
Add the buttermilk mixture into the flour mixture and gently fold until just combined using a spatula. Make sure not to overmix or the biscuits will turn out dense and dry.
Scoop about 3 tablespoons of the batter and drop it on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining batter, spacing them at least 2 inches apart.
Place them in the preheated oven and bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until the tops are turning light golden brown.
Once done baking, remove the biscuits from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before serving. While the biscuits are still warm, you can brush the top with melted butter.
