Frequent use of your microwave could lead to a build-up of food splatter and grease. This can be a breeding ground for bacteria which can result in a bad odor that can also stick to your food. Make sure to regularly clean and deodorize it when needed using only white vinegar and lemon. Vinegar has a high concentration of acetic acid that acts as a degreaser or disinfectant, plus, it makes your appliance shine, too. On the other hand, lemon has acidic substances that are antibacterial, help remove microorganisms, and disinfect. Learn how to do this technique with this video tutorial by Natural Cures on YouTube.
Step 1: Disinfect and clean
First, make sure to remove the microwave from the outlet before you start cleaning to avoid electric shocks. Fill a small glass bowl with some water, then add a tablespoon of white vinegar, and lightly stir to combine. Let the vinegar water mixture microwave for about 5 minutes on a high setting. Once done or after the microwave beeps, leave it inside for 3 more minutes to let all of the dirt soften even more. Now, grab a paper towel or clean cloth, then rub off all of the dirt around the inside of your microwave. Let the microwave’s turntable cool down completely before washing it in the sink with some dish soap and a sponge to avoid cracking the glass with thermal shock. Thoroughly dry all the parts before putting them back inside, then clean the external part of your microwave with a soft towel dampened with some water and a few drops of dish soap.

Step 2: Deodorize
After cleaning the microwave both inside and outside, make sure to deodorize it as well to remove all of the smell of food. Simply juice a lemon in a mixing bowl, then add about 17 ounces of water, and stir to combine. You can also add the peels of citrus fruits, some cloves, or cinnamon sticks to the water mixture, then mix them until well combined, and put it inside the microwave. Let the water lemon mixture microwave for about 2 minutes on a high setting, then once done, leave the bowl inside for a few more minutes to let the lemon juice get rid of all the smell of other food. Next, remove the bowl and wipe the microwave dry with a soft towel. Now, your microwave is ready to use again!
