Directions:

Step 1

Starting with a square in square block, grab one 4″ square of white fabric and two 4″ squares of colored fabric. Cut both colored fabrics diagonally, then take two of the triangle pieces and sew them on the opposite sides of your 4″ white square. After sewing, cut off the excess. Now, fold it in half, finger press, then line up your remaining triangles on both sides. Sew them, then square them up to make a 6″ square.

Step 2

Moving on to the magic square block, grab 3 1/2″ white and colored squares, 6 1/2″ x 2″ white and colored strips, and 3 1/2″ x 2″ white and colored strips. Now, take your colored square and your white strips. Lay your colored square down, and put the shorter strips on the side, and the longer strips on the top and bottom. Sew them on. After this, do the exact same thing but with the opposite colors. Once done, take both of your squares and put them on top of each other, right sides together. Clip on the seams to make sure they’re aligned, then draw a line on a diagonal. Mark a 1/4″ on both sides of the center. Sew down both of those lines, then cut right on the center. Lay the blocks according to the free pattern to complete the quilt top.
