This layer cake spools quilt from Fat Quarter Shop on Youtube may look complicated, but it’s actually super easy and fun to make! Perfect for beginners, impress your family and friends by making this cute and unique quilt pattern. Watch the video tutorial below to learn the step-by-step instructions on how to make this.
To start, take a background piece, a print layer cake, and a 3 & 1/2″ ruler and trim. Label them as A1 (your small print), A2 (your large print), your small background is B1 and your large background is B2. Do this on all of your 32 print squares and 32 background squares. Once you’re done, take one print and one background and put a print on the left side that’s small and a background on the right side that’s large. Make 32 of these and keep two fabrics together that match. Press toward your print and away from the background. Next, take an 8 & 1/2″ square ruler, turn it upside down, put the 3″ line right on the seam, then trim all around the edges. Make 32 with the print on the left and 32 with the background on the left.

Now for laying these, the bottom piece is going to have the big background on the left, and the small print on the right. Your matching piece has to be matching so place them right sides together and pin them to secure. After this, draw a line diagonally from corner to corner. From there, draw a line a quarter inch away, rotate, and do the same thing on the other side. Stitch the two outside lines, then cut on the center line. Press according to the pattern, then assemble the blocks. (click here for the free pattern.) Cut the little dog ears once you’re done ironing the blocks. Make 32 of each block.
