Cutting:
To start, divide your layer cakes into 18 light and 18 dark squares. Next, take a dark square and a light square, put them right sides together, secure them with pins, and then sew with a 1/4″ seam on the right and left side. Repeat these steps and make 18 pieces. Once done, take one piece, place your ruler over it, and cut at the four-inch mark and the six-inch mark. Rotate it, then repeat the cuts. Set them aside in stacks.

Now, assemble the unit. Press the pieces first to the dark fabric, then lay out your square and rectangle units (refer to the image below for the exact placement), stitch with a 1/4″ seam allowance, then press on the outside. Make two partial crumbles from each for a total of 36.
Now for the light strips, take two light rectangles and one dark square. Sew a 1/4″ seam, and press toward the center. Make 18 of these. After this, take two dark rectangles and one light square, sew a 1/4″ seam, and press to the center. Make 18 of these.
To assemble your block, take the two crumble units and one light strip, stitch with a 1/4″ seam allowance, and press to the center. Make 18 of these. Now for each row, lay three blocks with dark strips in between. Sew them together and press toward the dark strips. Make six rows, then sew those rows together to complete the quilt top.
