Ingredients:

Red Dough:

  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 1/4 cup 100% cherry juice, divided
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • red food dye

Black Dough:

  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup 60% cacao chocolate
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • black food dye
  • 1/2 cup 70% cacao chocolate chips

Directions:

Step 1

First, make the red dough. In a saucepan over medium-high heat, add 1 cup of 100% cherry juice and cook until reduced to syrup consistency. Trasfer it to a bowl, then stir in 1/4 cup coconut oil, 1/4 cup 100% cherry juice, and 1 tsp vanilla. Mix well and set aside. In a large bowl, add 2 cups of flour, 1 1/4 tsp baking powder, 3/4 tsp baking soda, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup white sugar, and 1/2 tsp salt. Mix well, then add the wet mixture. Knead until dough consistency, adding red food dye until you’re satisfied with the color.

Step 2

Now, make the black dough. Add 1/4 cup coconut oil and 1/4 cup 60% cacao chocolate in a small dish and microwave, stirring every 30 seconds, until the chocolate is melted. To that, add 1 tsp vanilla and 1/4 cup water with black food dye. Mix well and set aside. In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, 1 1/4 tsp baking powder, 3/4 tsp baking soda, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup white sugar, and 1/2 tsp salt. Mix well, then stir in the wet mixture. Knead until dough consistency. (If it becomes too dry, knead in water 1 tbsp at a time.) Lastly, knead in 1/2 cup 70% cacao chocolate chips. Wrap both dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate them for an hour.

Step 3

Once done, unwrap both doughs and cut each in half, placing the other halves in the plastic bag so they won’t dry. Cut each into 12 equal pieces, and roll them into balls. Next, flatten the black dough, then place a red ball inside and seal the black dough around it. Press the dough to 1/2″ thickness, then set aside. Repeat these steps to make more. After you finish, chill them in the freezer for 20 minutes, then bake at 400 degrees F for 12 to 15 minutes. Share and enjoy!
