Just looking at Jenny’s tents quilt, I already know it is an easy sewing project since most of Missouri Star‘s patterns are simple and beginner-friendly, but I couldn’t figure out how to make it without looking at the instructions, which made me think it’s a bit harder than usual. But when I watched how Jenny made it, I was absolutely impressed.

The block is made by snowballing a half-square triangle. If you are not familiar with the technique, it means sewing a small square on the corner of a square or rectangle diagonally from corner to corner. Once you have the block, all you need to do is sew them in pairs to form tents. That’s how easy it is.

Easy Tents Quilt Block Materials

  • 1 pack of 10″ squares print
  • 1 pack of 5″ squares solid
  • 1/2 yard of inner border
  • 1 yard of outer border

How to Make Tents Quilt Block

Step 1:

Get a light and a dark square from your 10″ square print pack. Place them right sides together and draw diagonal lines from corner to corner in both directions.

Step 2:

Sew on either side of the lines with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Cut directly on the lines, then cut it in half diagonally and vertically. Press each half-square triangle open – the dark should be on the top and the seam allowance should go to the dark side. You should have 8 pieces.

Step 3:

Get the 5″ solid squares and cut them in half horizontally and vertically. Press them in half diagonally to make a crease.

Step 4:

Take one half-square triangle and place one 2.5″ solid square in the dark corner. Make sure the diagonal line on the 2.5″ square is parallel to the diagonal line of the half-square triangle. Sew on the crease line. Repeat with the remaining half-square triangles.
