Materials:

  • quilt project
  • marking tool
  • rotary cutter

Directions:

Step 1

First, decide on how many sections you’d like to quilt. (You can quilt individual blocks or piece the blocks in two rows and quilt each row. Just keep in mind the more sections you use, the more seams you’ll have to join.) Cut your batting to the finished size of the section you’ll be quilting and finish once your block is assembled. (in this case, we’ll leave a 1/4-inch around.) Layer it onto your backing piece (make your backing slightly larger so you have some extra room to maneuver.) Base the layers together using basting spray or pins. Leave around 1/2 -inch unquilted around the edges for joining the blocks or rows together. (Use a marking tool to mark the edges of your block so you don’t quilt on those areas.) Now. you’re ready to quilt.

Step 2

Once you have quilted, trim the backing even with the top, then join the blocks together. Fold the backing and get it out of the way by pinning it in place. Next, put the two blocks on with the right sides together, and make sure the edges are aligned. Secure them with clips. Carefully sew the top together. Make sure not to get the batting or backing caught in the seam. (Pull out the pins as you go to avoid hitting them.) Once you have your pieces together, you’re going to have several layers, your quilt blocks, and then two layers of backing. Press the quilt blocks and one layer of backing all in one direction and then with the other piece of backing, you’re gonna iron about 1/4-inch and fold it over to cover up those other edges. (You can sew it by hand or by machine, just keep in mind if you opt for the machine, the seam will show through the top as well.) Use the same technique to join all your blocks or rows until the quilt is complete.
