After being vacant for several years, the building was purchased by a local couple who had a vision of transforming it into a boutique hotel that would reflect the character and charm of Waco. With the help of Chip and Joanna Gaines, the historic building has been revitalized and restored to its former glory, while incorporating modern amenities and design elements. The Hotel now stands as a testament to Waco’s rich history and bright future.

Slated to open soon,  The 1928 Hotel is set to be a three-story building that will feature a rooftop terrace, grand ballroom, and ground floor restaurant and café. Magnolia, the Gaines’ brand, has partnered with Adventurous Journeys Capital Partners to restore and renovate the building, with a commitment to preserving its unique history and character. “That is our dream for this hotel—that it would serve as an extension of the way we feel about our own home and all it represents to us, and that every guest who comes to stay would experience that same sense of belonging and community,” shared the couple.

Magnolia closed on the purchase of the building from McLennan County in November 2018, paying over $1 million for the temple building and an adjacent parking lot. The building’s past life as the home for the nobles of the Karem Shrine from 1928 to 1995 will be celebrated through the renovation process, adding to its unique character and charm. Magnolia has promised that more exciting details about The Hotel’s opening will be announced in the coming months.

Guests of The Hotel will be conveniently located just a few blocks from the Silos, making it the perfect place to stay during a visit to Waco. With its rich history and modern amenities, The Hotel is sure to offer a unique and memorable experience that reflects the character and charm of Waco.
