Materials for Jack-in-the-Box Quilt Block:

  • White fabric, for the background
  • Purple print fabric
  • Black print fabric
  • Marking pen, pencil, or chalk
  • Ruler
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and a cutting mat
  • Needle and thread
  • Iron, for pressing
  • Sewing machine
  • Layout (Click here to see the layout of the quilt block)

Cutting Requirements:

White Fabric

  • 8 squares at 3 inches
  • 1 square at 2½ inches

Purple Fabric

  • 4 squares at 3 inches
  • 4 rectangles at 4½ x 2½ inches

Black Fabric

  • 4 squares at 3 inches

Step 1

Make the half-square triangles and refer to the layout to see what combinations you’ll need. To make the half-square triangles, stack the squares with their right sides facing, then line the back diagonally from corner to corner, and stitch on either side of the line with ¼ inch seam allowance.

Step 2

Cut it apart along the line, then press it open, and cut off the nubs at the corner. Proceed to make the rest of the pieces, then arrange them as demonstrated in the video, and start stitching them per corner block units. Now, stitch them per row and then the rows to each other, then press the seams as you go.
